By Wednesday, he had a low grade temp. I took the day off work on Thursday and took him to the doctor. Double ear infection. She also mentioned some blisters on his tongue. She said it looked like a few canker sores. By Thursday night, he had blisters on his hands and feet. Hurray for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease!
On Friday, we took him back to the doctor because we were worried about him dehydrating. He was refusing to eat and drink all day on Friday. All he would do was sit there and cry. It was all I could do to hold him on my lap and not cry with him. The doctor noted that his mouth was covered in blisters. They were on his tongue, lips and cheeks. I understand why he was whining now. The doctor took it upon herself to scare the daylights out of my son. She explained to him that if he didn't eat and drink, he'd have to go to the hospital where they would stick needles in him and it would hurt a lot. I can't believe I paid $10.00 to have her scare him needlessly. I've given him the lecture minus the painful needle part.
Besides the painful blisters preventing him from eating, they also prevent him from sleeping. I now realize one of the key reasons why I didn't have another child. Mama really likes her sleep and Cael has been waking up every 20 minutes for the past two nights. I don't have a lot of hope that tonight will be better.
I feel for my boy. I feel even worse making him eat and drink and pretty much ignoring his screaming about it. I know it hurts him. Dehydration isn't fun either so he has to eat and drink. Time outs have been handed out liberally now that his mouth his starting to heal and he's more scared to eat than in actual pain. Still it hurts to listen to him cry. It really breaks my heart when he's yelling "I want my mommy!" in the middle of the night.
Trust me, buddy, I want my mommy too.

omg... Greta had this at Cale's age and I did too. (I was pregnant with Maisie... when Greta and I got hand & mouth) ... it's very painful... I feel sooo bad for him.
Try Pediasure... the "chocolate milk" kind... that's all that worked for us. We had "numbing spray" to use when we wanted to drink or try to eat something. See if the doctor will prescribe it... or try Oragel.
prayers to you my friend.
Nicky
I think we're finally starting to get better. We had Oragel. They wouldn't prescribe anything for him. The doctors said that he just has to get over it on his own.
